So I live in Manhattan right now (Lived in NYC for about 5 years), and I've been looking around for a coastal, secluded spot that I can go to relatively cheaply for a weekend. I'm fine with cabins and camping- if the environment is beautiful, and there are at least basic resources, that's enough. Anywhere on the east coast is pretty much game. I've considered maybe Providence, but it's a little cost prohibitive.
I just have no idea how to make this happen on the cheap without the aid of a car. I really need to take this trip in solitary to clear my head, and would love it if someone could give me a hand with figuring out how to make this trip happen.
I don't think cheap , coastal, and secluded are really compatible in the NYC metro area during the summer. There are millions of New Yorkers who want out of the city and it's environs starting today. The best bet is going somewhere in the middle of the week when prices are lower and everyone is at work, but even then cheap will be relative.
If you are fine with camping, Watch Hill on Fire Island has a campground that you can access via the LIRR and ferry. I would recommend going in the fall. In the summer, the mosquitoes will eat you alive out there.

Yeah... I've definitely noticed that everyone is scrambling. Especially as the tourists get denser.
I can definitely do mid-week trips. I'm a jazz musician, so most of the time my schedule is the exact opposite of 9-5. Week nights, and any time during the weekend hours are my busiest.
Out of state is totally fine by me if I can grab a bus in Chinatown or something (even the cheapest last minute ones there are $20 now... I'm borderline missing the sketch of Fungwah I used to see pretty much weekly when I was gigging in Boston. But I digress.)
Thanks for the giggle. With your headline, I thought you were going to be commenting on a recent robbery.
I don't know any place on the coast (I've gone to small towns in New York, but not coastal), but it's pretty simple to make it happen, wherever you choose.
Step 1: Look at train routes and bus routes to see what towns they service.
Step 2: Make a list of possibilities. (Really - Providence is "secluded"?)
Step 3: Spend a couple of hours online looking at hotel possibilities.

Two places that I've been midweek in the summer that are reasonable, if not cheap, are out on Montauk, and Atlanatic City. Most of the toursits in either place don't descend until the weekends. More mid-week people inn Montauk, fewer in AC, which was surprisingly delightful--low-cost hotel rooms at the big casino hotels, and a very, very nice and empty beach during the week. Plus all the boardwalk stuff to do. NOt exaccly isolated but pretty tame, and easy to get to by bus or train.
I've only driven there but you can get there by Metro North. It's by the Hudson River and there are places you can just sit and enjoy the serenity. You can also access hiking trails easily from that area.
