NEVER wire any money without at least viewing an apartment and signing a lease.

Thank you! I knew something was off about that listing. I hadn't even noticed the wire transfer part. Thankfully I wasn't considering seriously since I'm not moving til Jan. I was just thinking about viewing while I'm in town next week.

What are other easy to spot apartment scams? I've been reading up a lot on this page too http://nycdwellers.com/renters-guide

Good luck on your move and welcome to the Big Apple. You will most likely have to find a room mate if you want to live in Mahattan on your budget. Be careful as other previous posters stated, and don't wire any money without a contract/lease in hand. There are a lot of scams on Craigslist.

I recommend Murray Hill as well, you will love it. At elast 80% of the population there is in your age range. Lots of Texans in NYC as well. I would see people sporting UT gear everywhere.

The only way you are going to live anywhere close to the places you want to live is by getting a place with someone who already has a lease ie: roommate. You need to make at least double 55k to have your own place in the locations you listed and have a semi decent life. And don't forget you are going to need to have at least 3 times the rent upfront ( bare minimum) to move into any place.

Anything under $1700 for a studio in Manhattan is a scam, unless you are North of 92nd St.

Anything where you can't view the property is a scam.

Pretty much, don't bother looking at studios. Look for a shared room with at least 2 other people. Hope to jump in on their lease.

A studio can be had for $1700. In a coop that requires 40x monthly rent, that's $68,000 gross income to qualify. Even at $2000, that's $80,000, not the $110,000 you proclaim.
