That's because, unlike other cultures, the OP wouldnt be posting on CD but would be there helping to support the aged parents. But here she posts just expecting that there will be a government handout and she can go on her merry way with no concern.

I think my LL still thinks she is in the nursing home. she had a stroke, her daughter and granddaughter still live there, she was married and he lived there with them, she divorced and still there. ugh, !!

The LL is waiting for the other tenant to kick the bucket, and seeing him latley he is on his way out.

All SCRIE cases get thoroughly reviewed every 2 years.Applicants have to show leases and tax returns, so, if the original SCRIE applicant is dead, the exemption will be terminated.

Money never actually changes hands in the SCRIE program. The difference between the maximum legal rent and the the frozen SCRIE rent is given to the landlord in the form of a dollar for dollar reduction in the property tax.No different than the much, much bigger tax abatements given to big developers.

The vast majority of SCRIE recipients in NYC are senior citizens who worked their whole lives and were considered middle class while they were working. They fall into the poverty class on retirement when they have to struggle to make ends meet on a $1,200/month social security check.

This will be the fate of the majority of Americans in the future,as pensions are disappearing and the vast majority of fully employed people are unable to save anything during their work years. They will face old age with nothing but a very meager social security check.
