A friend of mine says he's after number 4052 and got called for later this year but when I called HR they said 4052 was the last number so not sure what's going on

If he got called they should have gave him a date to report for orientation, did he say he has a date?

called for what? Pre-orientation or cdl? Either one doesn't count as hired so HR will still say 4052 is last hired.
Based on the way things were done last year when I was hired, if they were putting a July class in, he wouldn't get "called" for anything, they only call you at the end of the process to officially offer you a spot in the final processing phase which basically means your hired. First he would get a pre orientation letter in the mail, if the class is in July that later would prob have him starting The process 1 to 2 months prior so he would get a pre o date sometime in may/June, usually about 2 weeks before the report date, so early March seems a bit premature for contact about a July class. But I've learned something quickly on this job, never expect anything cause things change a lot lol

I really don't anything about this but my opinion is that your friend may be not telling the truth. Why would they call him 4 months early ? Idk sounds alittle off. I think letters for pre-orientation will start sometime in may / June....... At least that's what I heard. But again I really don't have inside info.
