How is Autumn Ave around Etna Street and Danforth Street?
My wife and I are considering a move to Cypress but she works late and would be using the J at Cypress hills stop to get to the area above.
Is this a terrible idea? We live in Crown Heights now. dquejuan@gmail.com
This is my particular area of Cypress Hills, it's the eastern portion closer to Woodhaven & Forest Park.
Danforth is a small street and Autumn is the next block over. There are like 2-3 rows for sale on Autumn (around Danforth) right now. This zone is not too bad minus some noisy neighbors but this may vary per block. I will say this and judging from my experience. There are some individuals who live between Danforth and Etna, near the daycare and Bodega on the corner who are pretty noisy and loiter around. But I've seen them around in the day time.
Cypress station is 2 and a half blocks away from the Crescent station. The Cypress station is the least active in the neighborhood and some people don't like this station because of that. Outside of the station you have a supermarket, the cemetery and a deli nearby, also Jamaica Ave which is also kind of busy at the later hours. But keep in mind, most of the hostilities tend to happen (when it does happen) on Crescent and Norwood which are the 2 busiest stations in the neighborhood.

I would probably mainly use the Crescent st. station especially late at night, it'll add a block or two to your walk but the Cypress stop is pretty desolate at night. I would also add do not walk down Crescent st. between Fulton and Jamaica ave. at night instead walk down Fulton and then down Autumn ave., Crescent has a sketchy feel at night and gets pretty desolate under the El. All-in-All this section is heavily residential & is probably the safest part of Cypress Hills (near Woodhaven Border).

Yes, very lonely and a dark old NY feel, even though there are residential buildings around it and some dead end streets. Judging by the NYPD map, some of the muggings occurred in this area. The map still revealed that the Crescent and Norwood stops had more incidents but that's because it has more activity. I think criminals ambush people on the corners of those dead end streets. I sometimes see people speed walking through that area when I am exiting Crescent at night. LOL

I remember until a few years ago if you were waiting on the platform on a really windy day you could feel the whole station sway, I guess the bend makes it that way.
