St. Nicholas Avenue is worse off in the West 170s, but the QOL all along St. Nicholas avenue is pretty bad from the south of Washington Heights to the North.
I wouldn't say where you are at is unsafe as the majority of crime on the street in Washington Heights/Inwood are drug sales and if you have nothing to do with that, the odds of ever being confronted are very low. I don't really agree that people hanging on the corner or on your stoop makes you more in danger. I've found that since everyone knows everyone, it makes it less likely that you will become victimized by a stranger. I'm as White as a ghost and have never had a problem.
Where you live isn't any worse than Vermilyea or Sherman Ave, in my opinion. Most of the "thugs" are just small-time drug sellers who still open the front door for little old ladies; this isn't Compton and it's not the 1980's.
so, why didn't you move to Queens or Brooklyn? I wouldn't live in an area like that if THEY paid ME. I hope you have good locks on your doors and windows or you may come home to an emply apartment one day!
That's not a common crime in that neighborhood. Even on the rough blocks.

Seriously. If a stranger from the neighborhood was lurking around peeking in windows, most likely the neighborhood guys would beat his ass in the middle of the street.
