I find it surprising how the unanimous answer wasn't hip-hop. It should be.

By default, just due to its sheer size and numbers, NYC has produced all kinds of great musicians across various genres. But it's not the rock n' roll town L.A. is, or the blues town Memphis is, or the dance music town Miami is, etc. We have a little of everything. But if there's one genre of music we can truly claim as our own it's hip-hop.

Hip-hop started in the South Bronx. Queens later became the mecca of hip-hop music. If you made a top-20 list of the all-time greatest rappers, I bet you 15 of the 20 are likely from New York City and its surrounding area (Public Enemy, EPMD, De La Soul, and Eric B. & Rakim were from Long Island).

But what about all the CA rappers and the birth of hip-hop there? 2Pac, Dr. Dre, et al? Rap isn't my genre, but I remember hearing about all the 'east coast/west coast' rivalry growing up.

Dre came out in the mid 80s when he was part of a group called World Class Wreckin Cru, 2pac came out years after, early 90s.

There were block parties in the late 70s in LA too, and hip hop groups started to pop up in the early 80s.

But the real original birthplace of hip hop is the West Bronx, that's where it all started, in the early 70s.

Real NYC music is hardcore. They really (along with DC, and perhaps Boston) morphed punk into hardcore, and NYC were kings: Agnostic Front, Cro Mags, Kraut, United Blood, etc.

This is one obvious answer.

Interesting. Didn't realize this all went back into the 70s! It definitely didn't just appear overnight as I once thought.

Still love Beastie Boys. I performed Fight for Your Right in front of 1600 people once--what a thrill.
