Finally found an affordable place in Brooklyn! Sweet little place, up and comer by the end of the 3 train on Ashford. But Google maps says it takes an hour to get to Midtown by T where I will be working. This has to be wrong, or due to temporary rail work, no? I mean BK is just next door to Manhattan so it should only be half an hour or so, right?

You answered you own question. You said its by the END (as in far out in Brooklyn) of the 3 line. Last stop in Brooklyn to times sq is about an hour, factoring in the train, wait time, and walking to from the train. Look at a map and you will see how far out in Brooklyn that is. Brooklyn is huge my friend. Its not 10 blocks and everything train stop right next to Manhattan.

Ugh! That's a much longer commute than I have now. But it was hard to say no to the low rent, especially in Brooklyn a neighborhood that's up and coming and 'on its way'.

Really? I don't know that neighborhood as well as some others on this board but I don't see if being up and coming. There's a reason the rent is low and it's not just because of the distance from Manhattan.
