I visited NYC over the Fourth of July and it was one of the best experiences I ever had. I am from Chicago, IL and we have better architecture here, but NYC is just so much more dense and lively! Not to mention I think your metro rail system is 10x better than Chicago's.
I would love to live in NYC for a few years, but I feel like I have to make at least $100,000 a year to be able to enjoy what the city has to offer.

Days like today, nyc can be one of the most miserable places on earth. Walking in wind, rain, cold. People acting frantic, with holiday travel. Every single beggar and homeless person milking the thanksgiving thing....couldn't walk five feet today without being aggressively approached.

We experience the same thing here in Chicago. We have the same weather, cold, holiday travelers, beggars, and homeless people. The only major differences is that NYC is a lot denser, has a much higher cost of housing, and has hurricanes.
This fascination with density always...well...fascinates me. I don't quite get it. Maybe growing up around here, you just get annoyed with it. I would think coming from Chicago you'd be annoyed with it by now too. Traveling to other cities is cool, don't get me wrong. I enjoy it and would like to see more, but goddamn do I want some beach or mountain time on my vacations.
I think New York has better and more examples of great architecture, it's just interspersed with lots of crap. Chicago's cityscape is more uniformly pleasant.

Density is not all that great you know or all that cracked up to be!

Yes you are right that NYC is the heart of US. I am in NY from last 4+ years and I feeling proud to be a NYC citizen. It is not compulsary that you have to spent $100,000 a year. You should work on managements that how to spend the money, how much you should spend and where you should spend etc.
