Two Brooklyn cops sideswiped a parked SUV, then arrested a man sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle, accusing him of damaging their car, a suit charges.
And the officers would have gotten away with their lie — had the whole bizarre drama not been caught by a security camera.
Keep in mind that you're only hearing one side of the story, but as a video of the event exists, it seems pretty damning.
Evidently an NYPD car in Brownsville was going the wrong way down a one way street struck the side of a legally parked SUV. The owner was sitting in the passenger seat at the time. He claims that the officers did a quick (but apparently not thorough enough) check for surveillance cameras in the area, then arrested him for destruction of city property (which was later dropped).
There's no such charge as "destruction of city property" in regards to an accident, so the plaintiff is making that part up for sure, but the video definitely is damning for the cops if they indeed lied.
BUT, they likely didn't and his arrest wasn't a "cover up". He says he was in the passenger seat, but in the pictures he clearly gets out of the driver's side. If the vehicle was running, the cops would be required to run his license, which apparently was suspended because that charge stuck.
Car accidents aren't a big deal for cops at all. They have ZERO incentive to lie about an on-duty car accident. Literally ZERO. His cut rate lawyer probably thought his arrest would look bad for the cops, when in fact it is routine for any accident where one of the drivers has a suspended license.

This is a non-story.
"The video, reviewed by the Post, corroborates Jacksons story".
That quote is from the same article. The Post is pro-police, if even they say the cops are lying, and the video supports it..The cops are lying. Lying cops..not exactly a surprise
The video supports him saying the car was parked, that's it. It clearly doesn't support him saying he was in the passenger seat. It also does not give us any information regarding what is on the accident report. If that report says his vehicle was moving, then the cops lied. Otherwise, him being arrested means nothing. Suspended license + running vehicle = arrest.
I believe most of this story, but it's very hard for me to believe this man was in the passenger seat and then "slid over" to get out. Did you see the size of this man and how slowly he moves? It's not that easy to "slide over" in the front seat of a car, so I don't believe that part. He would have had no incentive to slide over, unless the passenger door was broken, and that wasn't mentioned.

The police car hit the passenger side of the SUV. It probably was damaged, and certainly getting out that side would have meant getting into traffic. Besides, how many people do you know who are sitting in the driver's side of their car get out facing BACKWARDS?
It's sort of like the cops punching you in the face then arresting you for assault because they hurt their hand. It's so audacious no one believes they'd do it, but they do.

I watched the video and I didn't see anything unusual about how the guy got out of his car. He got out of the driver's seat and turned to his left to approach the back of the car.
And if the passenger door was damaged, it seems that would be an excellent thing for the lawyer to point out. As far as I know, that point was not mentioned. And from the video, it doesn't really look like the cop car came anywhere near the passenger side door, but it's true the video's perspective is from the driver's side.
