speaking of 1993 that year my mom gave me a red and white pamphlet of some kind of concoction where you press a button and it blinds the perpetrator. you called an 800 # and ordered a little canister with a button. i don't remember what it was called or if it was legal or not. my mom was concerned because i used the subways occasionally but i didn't even feel unsafe back then.

I'm 5'9" and run like forrest gump! I'm not going to fight a thug unless I'm able to carry a gun legally.
Don't want to get hurt and don't want to go to jail for shooting the thugs while defending myself.
This is the best advice you're gonna get here.
A gun is out of the question, since it will get you jail time even if you're using it in self defense.
Illegal weapon possession has a mandatory 3 yr sentence, if I'm not mistaken.
You'll do the entire time before it even goes to a court of appeals, let alone the supreme court as someone else suggested.

Your best bet is being alert, don't ride on empty subway cars, sit close to the train conductor, don't wear flashy jewlery, and never fall asleep that late in the subway.
Following these tips I was able to ride the train 1hr from lower Manhattan to woodhaven queens past midnight for 2 yrs without any incident.

Uhm I'd definitely need a weapon for Newark and Jersey City. I can't take all the wackos and yahoos with me they have sweet subsidized housing.

Default jewelry

do these thieves go after ANY jewelry that looks good even tho it may not be anywhere near what is considered really valuable?

I bought quite a few men's rings at Sears, K Mart and JCP ranging in price from $30 to $130. the ones from K mart are kind of elaborate looking but people who really know jewelry consider them to be not much more than just costume jewelry. all were bought on discounted prices from the supposed original value

but would these thieves go after these rings anyway?

OP, keep in mind that most NY'ers don't want the right to defend themselves at all, with any weapon. They prefer to give in to the criminal animals to "avoid confrontation". The preferred responses to a violent criminal are to run, call the cops (that they all hate), or hand over their hard earned possessions. Just know that you aren't alone in your desire to exercise the basic human right of self-defense. Not all NY'ers choose to be sheep.
