As a mayor, he was pretty bad. And in retirement, he became vile.

And then he went downhill some more.
He started as a sane congressman and descended into vicious megalomania.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but one wonders if like so many having to be a closeted gay man shaped Mr. Koch into the often nasty "bitchy" sort of person he could be at times. Sort of like Paul Lynde but without the booze.

Mr. Koch cut his early political teeth busting his own people at Stonewall IIRC, that could not have been good PR for him later on.

In terms of housing Ed. Koch was very well connected to the NYC real estate lobby It was under his watch that much of the "affordable housing" on the UWS (SROs) and elsewhere were emptied out and turned into what would become luxury housing.

Slightly off topic but did anyone bother looking at the archives of the Village Voice via the link?

Forgotten how the VV once was that good a newspaper, instead of the rag it has become today mainly picked up for the sex adverts.

Skimmed through a few issues from the late 1970's and it is like remembering a whole other Greenwich Village and Manhattan for that matter.

ACTII hair cutters,
8th Street Playhouse (saw Rocky Horror there more than a few times)
Spartan Theatre (passed it once or twice)
J&R's Music World
Crazy Eddie Record and Tape Aslyum
Max's Kansas City
CBGB
The West End
The Gaiety (not touching that one)
The Ramrod (ditto)

Then there were the apartment listings:

Things such as "Ansonia Area, *huge* two bedroom, 2 bath, garage, luxury building with garage. Rent $822/month.

Bleecker Street - huge studio or one bedroom, $225/month.

Yorkville was still called "German town" in the listings and there are plenty of apartments <$350/month.
