Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Bushwick are already well on their way to gentrification for years now--development or not. Rents will rise in the area regardless. If the city (and the neighborhood) weren't so popular, then these massive structures wouldn't be necessary.
Sometimes I get the notion that certain neighborhood residents would like to create their own little countries with passports and then decide who is cool enough to live with them. This isn't about affordability--that's out the window for now and everyone knows it. This is about territory.
I don't know. IMO, Brooklyn already had its own distinct style and way of living. To me, these buildings bring it closer to being a replica of Manhattan.
This part of brooklyn has a much different feel than other parts of brooklyn like brownstone brooklyn for example. It is much more industrial and similar to industrial queens that borders it and surrounds the newtown creek.
I remember when I lived in Greenpoint Councilman Steve Levin talked big about "standing up for the community" against these big bad developers or whatever...of course he voted to give them public land. Nice.

Greenpoint was full of ugly EMPTY industrial buildings. The developments are an improvement!
They're mostly not empty. A bunch in the IBZ are still in industrial use. Others have been converted to residential. Also, most of Greenpoint is not industrial at all. Have you been there?
^ smh goodness! i hope i didn't offend anyone just now.
anyway tho, i'll survive. it's nice to see all this new stuff
popping up, even if that's all i can do is look at it too.
