Hello,

I looked back a few pages to see if I could find in "teacher" threads, but could not find any. I am teaching in Baltimore now (i love it) and its possible my wife and I might be moving to NYC due to her job. I have a few questions...
What is everyone's general feel on public schools?

Anyone on here actually teach in the city? Where do you teach? Do you like it?

I have had a hard time looking for a salary scale, as well...anyone know where a current one is?

We "might" live in the East Village area or Brooklyn...I obviously would like to teach close to where I work. What are the schools like there? (I teach elementary)

Thanks!

I teach high school Special Education in the South Bronx, and can tell you a bit about the district.

First of all, the salary schedule is --> HERE (http://schools.nyc.gov/NR/rdonlyres/15074C44-E87D-4A0A-982C-72DBAD1EAC8E/25312/SALARYSCHEDULESOCTOBER2007_Teacher.pdf - broken link)

Elementary teachers aren't in terribly high demand, unless you're bilingual and/or (perhaps) Special Ed. Available jobs will likely be in less-than-ideal areas and schools. I imagine schools in the East Village will be fairly decent, as it's a popular place to live. However Brooklyn is a LARGE borough, with many really good areas and many really bad areas, so it's impossible to generalize.

If you do decide to move here, you can check out the reputation of individual schools at InsideSchools.org as well as their performance Report Cards (http://schools.nyc.gov/daa/SchoolReports/ - broken link).

Best of luck to you!
