I always keep on hearing that brighton beach in Brooklyn is almost completely a russian jewish community with no real ethnic Russians or Ukrainians in the area. Since the Soviet Union broke up in 1991 do you think by now that brighton beach has diversified with an influx of non jewish russians and Ukrainians?
Yes. Jewish emigration from Russia/Ukraine pretty much ended 20 yrs ago. Most of the people who came here in the 80s /early 90s do not live in Brighton beach area. Only older people who dont speak English live there. The only exception is Manhattan Beach. Most of the people You see there on Brighton Beach (except older ladies) are ethnic Russians and Ukranians. You can see they all wear big crosses in the summer. This wasnt the case 20 yrs ago but Jews moved on
When did the ethnic Russians and Ukrainians started arriving to the brighton beach area and when did the russian speaking Jews from the former Soviet Union leave the area?

I honestly dont know. Last 10-15 yrs? I suspect most of the ethnic Russians and Ukranians You see there are Illegals. They're here to work as nannies, care takers and cleaning ladies. They stay for a few yrs, send money back home and leave. Most of them dont speak English and want to stay in that area. Even Korean shop owners on Brighton beach speak Russian. When did Russian speaking Jews from the former Soviet Union leave the area? 20 yrs ago. As soon as You get on your feet you get the hell outta there. Have You been there? Only older people who need to be around other Russians stayed. Manhattan beach is the only exception. very Small area with high concentration of Russian speaking jews. $$$ homes with practically no backyard
