When I said yes, what I meant was people do rent out their rooms or apartments on airbnb. I wasn't referring to project apartments being on airbnb. Although for all I know, they are there too.

I do think you could probably find some sketchiness on airbnb. I even saw a "Luv Shack" in East New York. Although maybe they were just trying to be catchy, not sketchy.

A travel agent recommended aribnb to us. We tried to use it in Trenton and that guy was going to pick us up at the airport but the deal fell through at the last minute due to his work schedule. We had success with it in NYC. It was a family's private home. They even picked us up and dropped us off at the airport. They had four airbnb rooms with lots of come and go between guests on the interview trail like us. That sucks if they made it illegal there?

I wonder why anyone would want to rent a room in the projects???? Gross. You see a photo of a room with a mattress on the floor and grafitti on the wall and decide "sure, I'd love to rent that"

I also hope they get kicked out of the apartment and the IRS comes after them

It looks like a prison cell. People rent rooms long term to people as well, Often profiteering over it by charging well over the cost of half the rent and utilities- knowing the mission it takes people to find a place to live. The "Worst room" blog is a great example of this.

Of course that kind of reporting is typical for the NEW YORK POST, the Murdoch owned paper written for dimwitted bigots with an attention span of under a minute.
"Yep, them thar POOR peole are making out like bandits."

Just like the Welfare Queen claptrap of a couple years ago.

I have a suggestion for Good Friday: Rupert Murdoch on a cross. Better yet, confiscate his money, give him an ugly NYCHA apartment in East Harlem and let HIM rent out his bedroom to tourists so that HE can "make out like a bandit."

WRONG. People have been doing this for years. In Harlem it is a very common practice, along with littering and throwing animals out on the streets. I could not even guess how common this is in other areas, "unemployed" folk with subsidized places making money by renting them to visitors. Add this to the various other illegal and quasi-illegal activities they have going on and you have - a lifestyle.

Solution - tenants need to turn in their fellow tenants. Everyone who does this makes it worse for the honest people living in stabilized apartments, low-income housing, and so on. We know so many decent people living in stabilized units.
