My wife, toddler and I have been on a Freelancers Insurance Co plan for several years now - their basic PPO, at about a grand a month. It's got a very high deductible and I cannot say that I'm a big fan of the company, with which I've often had to fight to get (or ultimately get denied) claims paid.

Have any other Freelancers Insurance plan users compared their plans with what's offered on the NYS health exchange, and would you comment on what you've found?

Anything you'd consider switching to?

We spend 3 months a year working in another state, which is covered by Freelancers; not sure if this is covered by other plans.

(I'm posting under NYC, not 'Health Insurance' as this is really a local issue.)

I'm having a slightly related problem--trying to fill out my (informal) partner's application on the nystateofhealth page. We live together, so it wants to know my coverage... except under its extensive drop-down menu of carriers, Freelancer's Insurance Co or FIC isn't listed. I've googled my ears blue and can't find a current alternative carrier.

I've been with FIC for years and years, but have really never used the insurance... just money down the drain, I guess, but I suppose it's a small price to pay for never getting sick or injured.

Would love some help/guidance... and also interested in answers to your particular question, as this whole shake-up has me motivated to either bring her onto my plan, or both of us find something new.

Luke

One of the issues I have with FIC is the very high deductible, compared with the plans offered on the health exchange.
This implies to me that FIC assumes its largely young self-employed work force won't get sick often or seriously ill.

On the other hand, they seem to have a lot of good doctors in network.
Anyway, there don't seem to many Freelancers Insurance Co members on this forum...
