It depends on what you are comfortable with. There are luxury condo buildings on
145th and Bradhurst Ave. You can map that to see where it is from 149th and St Nick.
There are brownstones on St Nick and up the block on Convent Ave and some on the blocks in between. You will find that some white people live in the condos or the brownstones. There is not a lot of white people around this area. Not like the area of Morningside Heights. St Nick the block itself, it is a very busy area. There is a lot of crime and drugs around, and I'm very serious about this, so you have to be careful. There are a lot of people hanging out on the street on St Nick, all the time unless it is very cold, raining or snowing. This is not going to change because some of the housing around is subsidized low income. The drugs have been around for the last 60 years and I'm not exaggerating, the old timers can tell you more about this. It just passes on from one generation to the next. All of this is kind of right out in the open if know what you are looking at.
If you would feel comfortable in this environment, you would probably be kind of safe in the day time, especially during the morning and evening rush hours. Because people are coming and going in and out of the subway on St Nick. But another consideration is that at night it can be very loud around there. It is not a quiet area. Check it out in the evenings and the weekends late afternoon and evening.
There may be better areas for you to check out. This area is still in the urban pioneering stage of gentrification.
Well, as they say the freaks come out at night. And there is a prostitution ring/track on Saint Nicholas right in that area. It's been there for years. There are a lot of drugs there. And there are working people and professionals there as well.
You get what you pay for. If you move to the 'hood, expect to experience the 'hood.
