Weather Channel app shows 4 degrees at 9AM with a wind chill factor of -17.
Now THAT'S cold.
Coldest I remember in NYC was 20 or 30 years ago, don't remember the year, when we reached -6 degrees. At the time I found it almost unbearable being outside. Today I will spare myself the pleasure.
So tonight will be the coldest in 2 decades and tomorrow will be super cold. All this is due to the Polar Vortex. Jet Blue has canceled its flights in the NYC and alternate side street parking is suspended tomorrow. So how is this super cold tonight and tomorrow going to effect you versus what you would normally do on a cold winter day/night in NYC?
Polar Vortex can hold a bozack. It did not change my routine. Carhartt jacket, Dolomite boots, and Goretex gloves were still on while going to work today. I experienced worst weather in Michigan where it is colder than a wolverine's toenail.
Coldest I was ever out in was skiing Whiteface Mountain at a real temperature of -15F. Only God knows what the wind chill factor was atop the mountain, must have been 50 below.
But once you got moving over the moguls generating body heat under ski-gear, stopping only to suck cabernet out of your wineskin, it didn't feel so cold. Must have skied for 6 hours stopping only when too plastered to continue.
Had I not pre-paid the trip I'd have never done it.
I walked out of my apartment the same way I did the last few Tuesdays. Seeing as how where I'm from it's -12 with windchills at -40, I can't really complain.
I've also snowshoed at -6 degrees at 7000 ft, so to be honest, this isn't that big of a deal. Its not fun, but nothing to be up in arms about.
