The primary doctors just told me that my mother is very depressed among other things and I should bring her to a Psychologist and possibly a Psychiatrist. She is 80 years old and I take care of her.
As you all know this type of therapy is super expensive and her insurance doesnt cover it.
Is there any type of Association in NYC or close by that offers this type help for low income people?
OP, have you searched the Office of Mental Health website? Also, if your mother has Medicaid, give them a call. They may cover services or provide reimbursement.
What does any of that have to do with the OP's question?

Therapy? Therapy and psycho analyse has proven to be insufficient among elderly and psychotic patients. The sad thing is that medications is right now the only alternative. But what the elderly needs is a relative or close friend to share everyday things and worries.
There are usually slideing scale or income-based mental health programs in almost every city. Because of their cheap cost, they're sometimes overwhelmed and hard to find, but that may be your only route for professional level care.
If this onset of depression is cognitive (not chemically induced), it's literally all in her head, and she can actually work through it with professional guidance and support from things such as books. Self-help books can be extremely helpful, especially if you do the exercises with her. You might just help yourself along the way.
