I read this in the hard copy of the paper this morning. Weird story. They clearly thought their collection was going to be private.

Bad idea to buy stolen property just because it's cheap from strangers, it's worse and dumb when you use
it to record yourself having sex with your wife. They look kind of too old to be pickpockets, but probably
guilty of being in possession of stolen property and greed.

I got asked by a stranger in his 20s if I want to buy an iPhone for cheap 2-3 weeks ago while walking
home. I just ignored him and keep walking because I don't trust him, the phone, and don't want any
illegal items in my possession.

Yes it seems they probably bought the phone "used" on Craigslist. Honestly I don't blame them since they could have bought it innocently and they did not know to reset it. But this is one reason I don't like to buy used stuff on Craigslist anymore.. they can also be locked by company after you purchase..
