Is there daily (and/or free?) parking close to Hudson River Park or is it best to get there by subway/bus? Is it difficult to find parking spot close by? Is street parking there mostly for Permits? I am from out of town. (Would it be better to forget the car and take train to Penn Station then public transportation to West Side?)

It is usually better to take other forms of transportation into the city but it depends on

1. where are you coming from

2. what are you going to be doing in the city

3. where are you staying

4. how long are you going to be here and when

Train to Penn Station and then buses and subways is best. A car is a pain in the ass especially If you don't know all the tricks.
If your car gets towed because you misread a sign it will spoil your whole trip.
