Hey there. It seems like this area of The Bronx is quite undervalued as far as rents go. I've been looking at Kingsbridge (the Van Courtlandt Village area seems especially nice) and Bedford Park. Is one neighborhood preferable to the other? It seems like Kingsbridge might offer a bit more in terms of restaurants, grocery shopping, and bars. Bedford Park is a little cheaper and has better transit into Manhattan (I'll be working close to Penn Station) with the B/D and 4 as opposed to the 1 in Kingsbridge. Is it possible to straddle both neighborhoods? There seem to be a plenty of apartments along Kingsbridge Road about halfway between The Concourse and The Deegan. I've heard it can be dodgy. Thoughts?
Kingsbridge by 225th Street/Bway can be dodgy. 231st and up is nice, the area around the reservoir is nice with beautiful views and I liked the hilly topography. VC is nice.
As for Bedford Park, the area around Moshulu Pkwy and the upper Grand Concourse is nice. Some of the areas can be sketchy..but I'm not too familiar with that area.
Bedford Park has some charm, used to be great, but still has some good points. I would consider the north side of Mosh parkway, that way you could get the D train at 207th to hit downtown. If you have kids however, you will need to put them in a private school. The Public Schools are horrible and very dangerous. That said, good luck.

Take a look at West 231thst area. West of Broadway and North of 231th street. Corlear, Tibbett and the other streets back there. A lot of of private homes and a few apt buildings. Some decent stores and the 1 train is right there.
Cool thanks for the info! Yeah the streets around the 1 stops and west of the reservoir look cool on Google Streetview, nice mix of apartment buildings and homes, cool architecture and hills. The B/D trains don't seem like a convenient walk from Kingsbridge though. How are the buses? Is it relatively easy to get to Belmont and other neighborhood?

Belmont is very isolated from mass transit with the exception of the city bus. That's also what kind of preserved the area for so long making it the hole in the doughnut. I do like the area but tough area for mass transit. BTW I would go closer to Broadway instead of up around the reservoir area. More stores and amenities down on Broadway.

Yeah, around Broadway close to a train stop seems like the sweet spot.
How does the area in general compare to other affordable areas of the city? Maybe compared to places in Queens and Brooklyn with a similar commute to midtown like Kew Gardens or Midwood? From the research I've done, I like the looks of Kingsbridge quite a bit more, and it seems to be more affordable. Am I missing something?
I used to take the 1 train from Spuyten Duyvil/Riverdale (231st), then switch at 96th for the express 2/3. I think the areas around Broadway is a little run down, but convenient. There are also BxM express buses that can save walking time if those drop off points in Manhattan (east or west) are convenient for you. Lastly, the Spuyten Duyvil Metro North station is an option if your work is in midtown east.
Aside from those, I would frequently take the Bx buses to/from the subway stop if I don't feel like walking. Of course that will add a few more minutes, but just throwing options out there if there are better prices away from Broadway.

RE: Belmont, it depends on how far you live from Fordham Rd. If you live relatively close your looking at a short bus ride to the train.
