I grew up in a suburb in the Midwest, it's not like I'm unfamiliar with malls. But we already have all the chain and big box stores a person could want, usually clustered together. Avoiding a few seconds in the rain hardly seems like a reason to radically alter the character of the city, to me anyway.
But I don't feel strongly about malls either way. I've just been surprised that every time a big site is being eyed for development, without fail, a bunch of people want to build a mall there.
