That list is rubbish, SuperMario already provided a list of the most dangerous areas in the city.

And lol at the Hunts Point comment. Yeah Im sure if you exclude Rikers Island you are left with a very tranquil and safe community lol

I'll go with the NYPD's data. Safest neighborhoods are in Staten Island.

Midtown being the worst, based solely on the complaint stats of the NYPD is understandable but not indicative of the "safety" of that area. The sheer volume of tourist-related crime in Times Square alone greatly skews the report numbers for that precinct.

You can choose to agree or disagree...but the method they used was the NYPD's crime stats and took those numbers and divided by the number of residents who live in that particular community. It is very straight forward and simple....where are you most likely to be a victim of crime? Midtown!

I am not sure why this listing is controversial...because it doesn't agree with your preconceived opinions?

Because it's an artifact. Normally doing crime rates that way makes perfect sense; it predictably gives skewed results in areas with huge numbers of people who are not counted in the population.

I get that an area that attracts alot more people, like Midtown, will skew the results...so what is your opinion then on places like Brooklyn heights/Dumbo which are generally low-density residential nabes? How about Fort Green/Clinton Hill? If you run down the list, you will note alot of low-traffic areas rank highly..

The list is accurate. It's gauging overall crime, not violent crime. So althought there's a high chance you won't get shot or stabbed in Midtown, there's a high chance of you getting pickpocketed, or something like that.

Correct 7th..it gives equal weight to all crime..whether it is an assault, murder, rape, or burgalry, etc. Where are you most likely to be the victim of a crime (not a specific crime but any crime) in NYC? This list tells you exactly where..and it is accurate. People just cannot believe reality...despite showing them the evidence and facts.

No. But when crime stats are under scrutiny it's important to bear in mind. A lot of assaults from Rikers skews the actual neighborhood stats.

It's a false statistic. The denominator is given as 10,000 people, but is actually 10,000 residents! If the "people" were increased by the 100,000 workers and 100,000 tourists flooding Midtown daily, its rate would be more accurate and far lower.
Let's do a simple, reality-based, comparison between Midtown South & SoBro:
NYPD - MS Precinct
Midtown South Crime 2013
In 2013, there were 2,863 "crimes" in the precinct, but 2,136 were grand larcenies, only 358 violent felonies (2 murders, 10 rapes, 174 robberies, 172 felony assaults).
Compare this with the "safe" South Bronx 40th precinct:
NYPD - 40 Precinct
40 Precinct Crime 2013
In 2013, there were 1,889 "crimes" in the precinct, but only 579 were GLs, while there were 994 violent felonies (8 murders, 25 rapes, 452 robberies, 509 felony assaults).
So, in Midtown, you are more likely to have your iPhone stolen, while in the SoBro, you're 3x to 4x more likely to be murdered, raped, robbed, shot or stabbed.
Your choice, people!
