So I visited NY last weekend and stayed in the bed-stuy area with a friend. I am appalled at the gentrification, there were renovated town brownstones everywhere and the hip new restaurants were charging $15+ a plate. I even went to a bar called one last shag and it was supposed to be latin night, but there was more white people with barely any latinos. They started playing Notorious BIG and I heard all these white girls rapping along saying the n word. I was appalled.

A gentrified Bed-Stuy is a safer place than the shot'em up bang bang Bed-Stuy full of thugs and hoodrats. When you compare both lifestyles, it obvious a gentrified Bed-Stuy is better.

I supposed it would have been better to have dilapidated falling down brownstones.

This post is ridiculous. The market sets the price for these brownstones. Once the area became safer, professional started moving in. The neighborhood had been 100% black. These black homeowners, who suffered through the crime wave and probably could only get a couple of hundred thousand for the brownstones in the 1990's, and selling them for well over $1,000,000. Good for them. And like anyone else would do, they are selling them to the highest bidder, irrespective of their race.

What do you want to do, place an income ceiling on people moving into certain neighborhoods?

Times have changed and it continues to do so at such a rapid pace. It's overbearing for a lot of people. But if you look at the big picture, a Do-and-Thrive Bed Stuy is better than a Do-or-Die Bed Stuy. As someone else stated.

No need to worry. White "hipsters" don't make kids, don't plant any lasting roots, and will most likely flee back to middle America when the economy tanks again. Then the city will section 8 all those wonderful condos that have been built, and move the great unwashed back in. Then I guess the "hood" will be more to your liking. Yeah I hate those "hipsters" too! They ruined a once great city.

As you do not live in Bedford Stuyvesant much less NYC don't see where you have a dog in this hunt.

OTOH many of those who do live in BS and have done so for years are happy to over joyed about the changes to their area. True not one hundred percent but more are content than not.

For one thing services long lacking are finally arriving from decent food choices on down. Crime while not totally eradicated still is less of the wild, wild, west it was back in the 1980's.

Bedford Stuyvesant like Harlem, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, and other areas are not gentrifying as much as returning to their former glory. Do you honestly believe all that fine housing stock was put there to be a slum?

Not even true. There are plenty of whites with kids in Chelsea, Williamsburg, and other cool neighborhoods.

LOL. Did you you go to the boutique wine store next door to One Last Shag? Or the gourmet candy store or cupcake place across the street? I'm guessing no...

By the way, if all the white people at one last shag bothered you, you could have gone to the bar Amarachi across the street. Much more colored folks over there.

Thank you for saying!

Hipsters both gay and straight are building families all over NYC which is why the City is scrambling to build new schools from Wall Street/Financial District up to SoHo/Tribeca and then across the river in "trendy" parts of Brooklyn.
