I can't thank everyone enough for all of the help! Regarding the tolerance issue for LGBT people, yes, I know that I won't have a problem in the majority of places where I would live. My partner and I are quiet professionals that would likely just get a nod and wave from even intolerant neighbors. However, I know there are places that are more prone to incidents such as gay-bashings. Just making sure I more avoid the unsuitable places. Also, I currently live in a very suburban area in a sprawled city. It would be great to move to a tighter knit neighborhood with more amenities and welcoming people.

Look into areas of northeastern Queens, Bayside, Bellerose, Douglaston, Floral Park, Auborndale, Fresh Meadows and western Nassau County. All of these areas have good access to LaGuardia and JFK. With your budget, you should be able to find something, but the dogs may create some problems. Finding a landlord that permits pets can be difficult, especially if you have more than one. You can also exercise them at dog parks.
