Hey all-
I am relocating to NYC from Boston to begin fellowship training at NYP-Columbia Presbyterian on 168th. I have two kids and would rather not live in the Heights if I could avoid it (simply for schooling reasons). We're considering an apt in the upper east side (E 70-80s) but I'm not sure what my commute would entail. Any thoughts on the commute, UES schools or other feasible options? Thanks in advace-

Might want to look into some of the charter schools in the city. Some of them are really starting to get excellent reputations.

From where your located the easiest ways to get uptown to the heights are two ways. It's a bit of a pain, the 1st is the easiest, because it's all train.

You take the 4/5/6 down to 42, catch the shuttle, then head uptown on either 1 or A.

The second way is to take the 4/5/6 up to 125th, at 125th you can take a Bus, if I remember correctly it's the 101 bus. This bus goes into the Washington Heights area.

It would be great if in the future, the MTA made up a crosstown shuttle uptown, maybe at 125th.

You can also get any cross town bus closest to you for example E 72nd St or E 81 ST or E 86th St and go to Central Park West and catch the C or A train if it is local to 168th.

Actually, one of my mentors lived on Fifth Avenue and worked at CPMC. She took the Number 4 Madison Avenue bus every morning. Not quick, but she did her reading on the bus. It drops you RIGHT in front of the hospital.

Alternatively, take a bus to the West side, hop on the Broadway IRT and get off at 168th St.

There is an express bus that goes from the Upper East Side to 178th during rush hour. I've taken it to my doc's office. I don't recall the number, but you should be able to HopStop it.
