Hmm...gays can march in the parade so long as nobody knows they are gay. If you are celebrating Irish heritage, and gleefully showing the Irish in all walks of life with their uniforms, professional attire, athletic gear, etc...gays are a part of life also...why can't they do the same?
If everyone can participate in the way they want except gays...that's where the problem is and why DeBlasio is doing the right thing by passing on this parade. It's like if the Macy's parade said blacks can participate but they have to wear white makeup so nobody knows they are black..otherwise they can't march. Putting stipulations just on one group because of who they are sexually attracted to is unacceptable.
Gays should show up and hold signs "Gays Need Not Apply" like the signs all over NYC back in the 1800s "Irish Need Not Apply." The hypocricy is staggering....it wasn't that long ago you saw cartoons like this:
Last I checked he was mayor of the whole city. It's pretty crazy that he's chosen to discriminate against Irish Americans as one of his first tasks in office

yup, your right, he is the mayor.
but he still doesn't have to do something he doesnt agree with.

You have it wrong . It is the Irish (leaders of the group) that are discriminating not the Mayor. At least
we know where you stand on this issue.

They are not discriminating, gays are allowed to march in the parade they just have been asked not to be out promoting gay pride just like they wouldn't want straight people promoting straight pride
The parade isn't about sexuality it's about Irish Heritage

well, if your an Irish fireman and wearing a fireman uniform, then you are advertising what you do.
if you are a Irish police officer and wearing a police uniform, you are advertising what you are.
what part are you not getting?????
Actually on behalf of all the gays, I wouldn't even want to march in the freaking irish parade anyway, just because of the gay issue. you can take that parade and shove it.
gays can march in the parade so long as nobody knows they are gay.
Nobody knew Koch was gay?
Go ahead, SoBro, don your rainbow kilt & strut your stuff up Fifth Avenue!

Marchers can get tossed from the parade for wearing athletic gear. You're not supposed to even wear jeans or sneakers. FDNY can't even wear their green berets anymore.

See, that's where you're wrong. There are strict guidelines for participating groups. There are Jews in Ireland. Yet, the JDL could not demand entry into the parade. There are 1 million Protestants in Ireland. However, no Orange Order group would be allowed to march, in the name of diversity.

He can do whatever he wants. He won't be missed.

Really? There are no blacks in the St. Patrick's Day Parade? Unless they are in whiteface? How did my brother's Jamaican girlfriend manage to 'pass'?

It's really sickening how obsessed NYC is with segmenting each and every person into one group or another and then demanding that everyone recognize the beauty of every single one, or else.
Well let's hope de Blasio remains in good health because the public advocate, Leticia James, would ban all cops and firefighters from marching in the parade in their uniforms. Yes, the public advocate becomes mayor if the current mayor cannot perform his duties. Compared to James, de Blasio is a right wing conservative.
