What? What are you talking about? No one forces you to work for anyone, this is not the USSR. Are you in a dreamworld?
No, genius, no one forces you to work for anyone. You have to get on your knees and BEG for a job and IF they see fit they give it to you. You don't CHOOSE where to work and automatically get a job there. Then, when THEY decide THEY are done with you, THEY "downsize" your butt right out the door.
What's really bugging you, and the nutjobs like you, is that while unionized workers got nothing during the flush times, their decision has paid off big time NOW that the economy got screwed by the "free market". So , you pull out the "WE'RE TAXPAYERS" battle cry to soothe your burned butts because you CHOSE to work the private sector and work at someone else's whim.
Boo hoo for you and your taxes.
I'll cry for you when I'm collecting my pension that you'll be paying for as long as I live!!!
Madison you too can very easily get a city job, just take the test. All you have to do then is everyday strap on some body armor, take a chance that you won't be shot, knifed, burned, exposed to noxious chemicals, avoid getting beat up by a child that you are teaching, and you are good to go!

Really? Is that how you landed in your dead-end job? Me, I was recruited - they begged me to come work for them. How sad for you to never be of value to an employer...

Good luck with that, I'm very good at what I do. They decide they want me to leave, I've got 20 others calling every month waiting for me to come aboard.

What's really bugging you,
Is having to read garbage from unsuccessful people like you polluting my thread.

First off, the public workers CHOSE not to negotiate with Bloomberg because they expected the next mayor to be more pliable and would accede to their lunatic demands.
Second, economic superstar, if everyone worked for the government it would be a communist country, which seems to be what the unsuccessful amongst us like yourself prefer.
Third, I find it hilarious that the same leftists screaming that only the middle class pay taxes conveniently forget that when taxes are being raised on that same middle class to cover the increased salaries and benefits of their beloved public union employees. So those leftists only care up to a point about the middle class, they care much more for their socialist allies in the public employee unions...

Sure, ask people in RI, Detroit, Stockton and Birmingham how well their pensions are doing. Hope you plan to take a second job in retirement, friend...good luck on collecting it...

Yes, because the 360,000 NYC public workers are all firemen, cops, teachers and MTA workers...
And what are they so afraid of, that without the unacceptable leverage, er I mean blackmail, that their public union provides they will find that they won't be able to force the rest of the taxpayers to accept their ludicrous demands.
Amazing how cities/states for centuries were able to survive without public employee unions, just remarkable - same for the federal government today. Just incredible.

People who oppose unions routinely spout right-wing talking points and have zero knowledge about the history of unions and what they've contributed to our society.
Companies aren't immoral, but they are amoral. They will do what they can to get as much work out of employees for the least amount of money. If you don't know that, you've never worked a day in your life at the managerial level.
If it wasn't for unions, we wouldn't have a 5-day work week and weekends and child labor laws. We also probably wouldn't have paid sick time or paid vacation. These are things that speak to the quality of life in this country. Most important of all, if it wasn't for unions, there would be no middle class. There would just be a working class controlled by plutocrats. Without that large tax base, we would have no public institutions, no interstate highway system, no energy grid, no significant military power, and no national parks, public beaches and state universities.
Without unions, the auto industry in Detroit would have continued to pay slave labor wages and forced employees to work 6 or 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. No middle class and a terrible environment for families. Millions of families would not have been able to send their kids to college. It would be an entirely different country. And not a better one.

And there would be no retirement plans, no pensions and not even 401k plans. And there's be no medical benefits, either.

I think you mean it would have always been what it is now becoming.
Teachers' salaries should be raised 17.16%, and it should be backdated to the past 14 years. Public school teachers are God's gift to New York.
