You can probably get a good deal now that the PATH will be shutdown on weekends for a year. (The WTC-NWK line only)

NJ is a great fit but you will have to extend your commute time a bit. However, NJ provides the most convenient transportation to the NYU area. You could take the PATH right to Christopher Street.

If you prefer a building atmosphere then you want the city if you want just a nice quiet neighborhood with parking , close to L train, parking for your car, safe , and pretty nice apartments then I say Canarsie

I think you are asking for a lot. The price isn't bad because you can find even a 2 bedroom for that price in most of the boroughs. If you are looking for new, most of the nicest are going up in Flushing and Long Island City. Forest Hills also has some nice new buildings but I think you will be over your price.

You can get a nice 1 bedroom for 1400-1500 in Forest Hills but it's going to be an older building. Most places that are new are probably going to run over 2k or more since most of the buildings that are new are luxury. If you drop that need, you will have endless possibilities in Jersey, Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island. So just look around and if modern is a must, find a way to up your budget.
