I am asking about real shops (with warranty and so on), not Craiglist or private stuff.

there are lots of little shops in midtown that might have these -- but why second hand--- I would look
on line first there are lots of companies that sell these things on line... I bought my laptop for about $200 an HP with a number of bells and whistles. These are legit companies who offer a limited warranty.
You can find reputable places to buy items, such as B&H Photo Video that has an extensive used department, and requires ID when selling the items. Similarly, you can find many electronics at GameStop; however, selection varies by store inventory. GameStop has come in handy for me, personally, when I needed to replace a part for a vintage game system. And, B&H does also have some good vintage cameras where the quality is very good, so I would tend to trust them for a purchase.
However, if looking at something like a laptop, I agree that I would source new, with fewer add-ons, or refurbished from the manufacturer (a la Apple), before I would consider a used purchase, only owing to the warranty and serviceability of the machine. If you want a machine that you can use for a couple of years without hassle, check Best Buy, as there are usually computers that will fit the bill in the $300-$400 price bracket. I bought a Toshiba for one of my aunts who needed a lightweight computer for travel, and I think it was right around $400 for an 6GB RAM/750GB with an Intel i3 processor, not the fastest processor, but fine for most needs, aside from gaming, etc. It was one of those Best Buy box special displays in the store, that I happened to see when walking through, and it was a good value for the price, including the mouse, carrying sleeve, etc. I have also seen some with fewer features on Best Buy's website for $279, so I'd tend to look for something more basic that was new, rather than higher-end used, only because the repairs might catch up with you very soon on an older, higher-end machine, and I don't see such units trading at bargain basement prices, either.
ETA: You may also want to check online as Gazelle buys used items and then refurbishes them for sale; however, I believe the only outlets are eBay and Amazon storefronts.

It does, but IIRC, they got rid of their big used rack. Also, they only did audio equipment, not computers and other electronics.
The OP could try pawn shops, but they try to get top dollar.
I have to say that I was a little hesitant to buy online refurbished laptop until one of my daughters techie friends pointed me in the right direction and I could not be happier with my HP at about 50% off list. This is the site I used.
