There is a street in Pelham Parkway that I like the name of because it is so simple.It's "Esplanade". It's not a street,not a road ,not an avenue,not a terrace ,nor a place………….just Esplanade. The 5 train tracks run under the middle of it.
That was the route of the NY, Westchester, and Boston RR (I hope that's the correct name), built to compete with the NY, NH, and Hartford RR. It was unsucessful, alas. The stations on the 5 were originally part of that railroad. Other than that, virtually the entire ROW north of the Bronx is gone.
When riding the subways, I just love them all, even the numbered ones.
