You can use any router. I'd recommend getting one that is dual band, though they are more expensive. The cheaper routers only use one band and it is the most common through all routers so there is a lot of interference when in an apartment building and everyone's wireless signal is intertwining with each other.
2.4 ghz is the standard, but 5ghz is the second band.
The 5 ghz band is less utilized so you can get a better wifi connection while in your apartment, but the only downside is the signal cannot cut through walls, especially brick and cement walls as good as the 2.4 ghz band.
Would I be able to connectt he Netgear Range Max Dual band Wireless N Wifi WNDA 3100 v2 directly to the modem and get wifi ??? It slooks olike a USB type thing
I have 2 routers in the crib, a Linksys and an Airport. You need a router in order to set up a network...unless they have modems with that capability built in nowadays.

No, that's not a router, that's a USB receiver. It allows a computer to pick up WiFi signals and connect to a network. You only need that if you computer doesn't have built in WiFi (most desktops don't, most laptops do). You still need a router to create the network.
Pretty much any basic router will be fine for a studio. This guy is one of the most popular on the market these days.
I am in looking to buy my own router to use with my modem so I can get wifi without Optimum forcing me to upgrade.

My suggestion is don't call us when your network crashes and you call Optimum and they say "I'm sorry the problem must be in your router you purchased because our signal is good going through the modem"

So on the rare occasion when your service goes down, simply disconnect your router and use a wired connection when you call them.
