The pill problem has become a heroin problem. The feds have cracked down on overprescribing Dr. Feelgoods and complicit pharmacists, so Oxys cost far more than readily available H. Law of unintended consequences.
They don't write 'em like they used to lol!

Seriously though the NYT is late to the dance on this. People have been copping out in the open at the Stapleton SIR train station for twenty years, at least.

Chicken soup and half aspirin that's what they prescribe nowadays when you crawl to the appointment with a multiple fracture and a few dislocated joints. Best to have a stash hidden under the kitchen sink like those oscar winning actors.

Staten Island has the largest number of drug abusers in NYC and is second to only one other county in NY State. The Island is filled with people who use, parents, kids, everyone. I personally know 4 dead kids and many addicts that are now in their 20s. These are kids from good homes! Actually Heroin is a HUGE problem on Staten Island, Long Island, everywhere now. With the crackdown on the pills, Heroin is in the same class of drugs and cost 10 bucks a bag instead of 20 to 30 bucks per pill. The Heroin trade here is run by the Albanian mob. It's devastating. Saying that living here is the reason people use, is ignorant. There are rural areas where the use isn't as bad. There are things to do here and Manhattan is a ferry ride away. I wish I knew why the drug abuse is so high here.....
