They are mostly Ukrainians and Belorussians, not Slavic Russians.
There are Slavic Russians though, and the Ukrainians and Belorussians are Slavic as well. It's pretty easy to tell who is Ukrainian, as many speak Ukrainian, not Russian. Areas in Ukraine like Odessa and Donetsk have large ethnic Russian populations, so you have some from there as well.
Though you're right that Ukrainians outnumber Slavic Russians here.
I almost moved back to Sheepshead Bay recently (I'm a native), but I don't get an upper middle class vibe at all. Working class, blue collar. Not necessarily poor, but closer to poor than rich. Rent is a lot cheaper in SB than it is in the neighborhoods mentioned above (like Bay Ridge or Dyker Heights). I almost got a place for $1100 that would've been at around $1750 in Southwestern Brooklyn.
I wouldn't advise anyone go near the SB Road station late at night if they don't have to (albeit the Neck Rd and Ave U stations are safer).
The only part that really counts for this thread on SB is the area south of the Belt for the most part. North of the Belt is mixed.
FWIW (or FYI) the perspective of what is considered poor/rich to someone in NYC is not the same as those who have moved away from the area. I transplanted away from this area nearly 400 miles south. I live in an middle class area where there are no homes that look like they need work nor are there any cars that look like they need to head for a junk yard. So just working with the two numbers you quoted, $1100 is my monthly mortgage on a 3000 sqft home sitting on 10 acres of land and $1750 is my yearly property tax. Consider it Long Island without the traffic where it takes no more than a 30 minutes drive to get anything.
There is barely any SB south of the Belt. Just Emmons. Everything beyond that is Manhattan Beach.
Take a trip there. They've bulldozed many blocks and put in new apartment buildings especially between E 21st and E 28th. Drive up/down each street you find until Coyle and see the oddity of a building sitting on two house lots mixed in with a row of older 1 family homes.
OR you can simply do Google map street view and look at this area (It would give you a better perspective if you saw what it used to look like in the 80-90's).

I know there's alot more. I fly into NYC about once a month for business. Each time I fly back out I stop in the Bay and go to Randazzo's or stop in Mill Basin where there is a good Deli on Ave T. And if I have time I'll go to Trump and visit a few relatives (and try to stay away from the slivotitz and vodka).
Depends on who you ask. I'm from Ave Y, and if you asked those types what Ave U was, they'd likely say Madison or Homecrest rather than SB. My family used to say the Bay ended at Neck Road.

Yeah, I'd also say that area is Madison or Homecrest. My family generally associates the area up to Neck Rd/Ave V with SB. Though google maps and wikipedia say Homecrest and Madison are subsections of Sheepshead Bay, so I just use that.
Madison isn't a real neighborhood. It's named after James Madison HS. I'd imagine most people from outside of the Bay would consider Madison to be the Bay, but we're elitists.
