City-Dwellers,

Good Evening!
I currently live in the midwest (Greater Chicago area) and am thinking about moving to NYC in the June-July timeframe.

The City has completely dazzled me every time I've been there. But there's a difference between being a tourist and living at a certain place.

I'm lucky enough to have a decent job and earn about 110k per year. It would be great if you folks could help me out with what kind of salary should I expect (or negotiate for) if I were to move to NYC.

Cheers,
a

It would really depend on what field you're in, what position you're going for, in which company you're applying to and how much experience you have. A good resume with various references and recommendations would give you an advantage when it comes to negotiating salaries. Be realistic though, and don't expect a salary increase of more than 25/30k. It depends on where in the city you would live, but honestly, with that salary you could live comfortably in most areas of the city.

Thanks @Astorian31!
I'm in the services-management department and the NYC gig comes with much greater responsibility, and the references/recommendations part has been taken care of. So while there is a scope for negotiations, you're right about being realistic!

I would like to live in Manhattan for some time but my wife suggests NJ as living in the City might be too costly for us (we don't have kids). I've been doing a bunch of internet research to make my case and to change the verdict.

Let's see how it goes.
