Houses for sale in Montclair, Nutley, Bloomfield, or. Bergen County for 300K? I don't think so. And let's be honest here--your basic NJ Transit train ride might be 30 minutes, but very few people in NJ have a commute of less than an hour door to door. There's usually driving to the station, parking, and often a connection to PATH or a city subway and then a walk to an office. As someone says in the thread I posted below, even if you live in a tent on the banks of the Hudson, you're not getting a 20-minute commute.

You are correct about Paterson and East Orange. Not safe places to live. I'm sure saying that will prompt someone to leap in here and shriek about how they live in Paterson or East Orange and it's just a wonderful place, but they're not unless you have a high tolerance for crime.

If you are looking in New Jersey, come over to the NJ forum and we will help you, but please be realistic. And read this thread before you do!
