OK,I am sort of shocked at all the BS being thrown around on this thread about Wakefield and how awful it is and how the people don't take care of their houses, etc. So,decided to insert here a google street view link to a rather typical block of the area. It's about 1 1/2 blocks East of the evidently dreaded White Plains Road on 231 ST:
Now,There are worse blocks in Wakefield but there are also much better. This is actually pretty typical.
Honestly, except for the fact that probably 95% of the residents are black, when I walk around in most of Wakefield,I don't see much physical difference between Wakefield and most of Throg's Neck or most of Queens. The houses and properties are as well taken care of as they are in any other working class section of NYC.
Anyone seriously think this block looked any better 30 years ago when it had a bunch of Micks( I can say that) living on it? Looks like Archie Bunkers neighborhood if you ask me.

You think the "Micks" as you say had their entire porch fenced in like a jail? Not the one next door which just has the windows but the whole porch area. BTW Wakefield was more Italian not irish https://maps.google.com/maps?client=...tNYTU7z9NsnV0Q Poor latino owner of that bodega on S/E/C was murdered. The building where someone seems to have scribbled "Bloods" BTW is Da Neck changing? it sure is. My buddy told me there was shooting at the Burger Bar right on Tremont Ave. Used to be the Latin kitchen. Apparently some party promoter had a bunch of thugs from the Polo Grounds at this place. http://www.bxtimes.com/stories/2014/...bx_2014_9.html

No,you are probably right on both counts. The Micks wouldn't have put up bars like that. It definitely looks like more of an Italian thing. They seem to like that sort of stuff.

Italians? Those bars wouldnt of been there 50 years ago. Don't tell me you spent some summer months in Wakefield also? I only happened to go to HS in the area and had some buddies that were holdouts in the area.
DAS,as someone who watches News12 The Bronx religiously,I can tell you that there seems to be more crime in the upper two teens to mid two twenties, West of White Plains Rd, than in other areas up there.

Believe it or not, that bowed white iron work is very 1970's.There is a lot of it around Morris Park and Pelham Gardens……not done to quite such a cage like effect as above, but it is classic 1970's iron work,so it's probably been there quite a while.
Italians still seem to like lots of metal work on their houses ,fences and gates but these days it tends to be shiny polished steel.

Doing a 360 degree view, that small house is the only one on that block with that type of ironwork. Not sure what your objective was to point out that one house.

So no crime on 241th Street and WPR. That's a safe haven? DAS, I din't select that google picture, Bluedog did. Why would someone put iron fencing all the way around the house? The only thing missing is a mote with gators. That fencing didn't come in the 70's. It came when the savages moved in and starting robbing people. Why lie and be politically correct?
