In some districts where the men are smart and dont run and dump there are relays. A relay is taking the truck to the dump. That is a pretty good gig depending where you are you can do anywhere from 2 to 4 relays. In other districts they send you out with a broom, shovel and basket and have you clean the streets. The latter is pretty much what you will be doing 90 percent of the time.

what districts does a lot of relays an would be the best districts for new people to try to get in to.

Actually no it wouldnt be. Those districts usually have a lot of senior guys and you would be very low there for a while. Your best bet is go to a district close to your home and when you get time on the job transfer to a better district.

sweeping the streets with a broom??? i've never seen a sanitation worker do that

No I mean they will give you a broom, shovel and a basket with wheels. You will use this to sweep the streets of bronx, manhattan, brooklyn, and queens.

i ain't never seen that before......... so your first yrs on the job you won't ride on the collection trucks

Well you do ride the collection truck but not for collection. You put the bucket, shovel and broom on the collection truck and go where they tell you to and do your street cleaning.
