United Transportation Union Local 645 may go on strike. The LIRR has issued a equest for a second Presidential Emergency Board which should delay any strike from the union until July 19th. But with 59 out of 60 MTA Unions working without a contract, things may get ugly.

With new PEB request, LIRR strike pushed to July :: Second Ave. Sagas

Now that we have a Democrat running for reelection in the fall for Governor and now that progressive won control of NYC, the unions will see this as their chance and will be emboldened. Look for fares to go up for transit in 2015.

Is this just a LIRR strike without the subway and NYC buses? If so perhaps you want to post this also on the Long Island forum.

Fares will go up regardless.

The question is how much will it go up? How much the public will suffer financially from fare increase? As a result, the public will probably have a backlash against the union.

Which is just unreal. Has service ever been worse in the last ten years? Everytime you turned on the TV this winter, it was one MTA debacle after another.
They are all lined up to get their bigger slice of the progressive cake, before the cake runs out.

what irks me is the finger pointing & the entitlement by everyone who gets paid by MTA

MTA unions workers say its MTA management fault. Oh we got crappy infrastructure, its not union workers fault. Oh, the weather is not our fault either. Oh we never had a increase & deserve a cost of living expense increase too. Late trains, cancelled trains, late bus, etc etc..not our fault...complain to management. Oh, you don't like MTA service....its cheaper than driving!!!

Yes, there are some truths to it all. At the end of the day, we pay for crappy service and it is not really serving the public.....and we should pay more & more to get less & less. The mta union workers & management represent the company they work for. There has to be accountability.

Even better would be for the union to be de-certified by the courts/elected officials, and we start to see rational work rules and costs for labor and operations finally implemented.

I think it might actually be a CRIME for the MTA to go on strike in NYC.

Has something changed over the years that I'm not aware of?

You're right, technically it is a crime. But it didn't stop them from striking under Pataki. The union leader who lead the strike was jailed and the particular union was fined to the tune of one million a day. They may be thinking they'll get away with more under a Democratic governor and mayor. And once raises and conditions are granted, its very hard to reverse them in public sector unions. We'll see what actually works out. The MTA would still have other tools though to reduce costs. I think eventually they'll get rid of all ticket salesman and everyone will have to use the ticket machines.
