Depends on where in Texas these days. His $6000 isn't going to take him far in the Austin area... Austin is probably only 20-25% less expensive than CA and NYC these days.
He'd probably find some place in Houston, SA, or Dallas..but only for a short period of time before the money would run out there as well.
You have to follow the thread. OP asks for cheap rentals. Another poster refers him to areas like Glendale, Ridgewood and Maspeth and says there are cheap rentals there. Then comes the question about what cheap means in response to that specific post about those neighborhoods
So I answered what I believe the price ranges are in those neighborhoods that were referred to as cheap.
If you want to say what you think a cheap apartment is ($$ amount) and in which neighborhoods in NY you can find those prices, then go for it. No one's stopping you.
Where in NJ do you live? Unless you're far south or west, why not stay home for a bit, get a job in the city, commute for a while and save up more, and then move when you have a steady income?
You could also look into shares (renting a single room in an apartment with roommates), but even then, I would suggest having a steady income first.
Cheap and safe don't always go together. Living where you can afford should be the better question.
