No right or wrong answers here. I am just curious to hear some opinions on this. I fully realize that the city had a LOT of problems in the 70s but there is still a certain amount of nostalgia for that time period.
A little about myself. I was born in Queens in 1967 and moved to South Carolina in 1974. I am close to my family in Queens and over the years I have spent many months back in the city sometimes just visiting and sometimes working. My last job in the city was in 2002 in an office overlooking 26th St and Madison Ave.
Here is my list of some things that created the image of NYC in the 70s for better or worse. Feel free to add to it.
2 great movies that showed how NYC looked in the 70s-The French Connection and the 7 UPs
Ford to City: Drop Dead - President Ford denies the city federal assistance to avoid going broke ,October 1975
Definitely more interesting in the 70's. It is almost too tame and boring right now. That plus a lot of things you find in the city now can be easily found in other cities. Not so back then.
The natives will always say it was better before the transplants took over Manhattan. Really, they only took midtown and downtown. Everywhere else is the same though.
The transplant say it is better now. Manhattan that is.
I am not trying to cause a native vrs transplant divide here but after the 80s the city did seem to lose a certain amount of its edge. On the other hand when I was there working in the early 2000s I liked that the city seemed cleaner and safer than it had in the past .The subway was reliable and the cars were not covered in graffiti (like in the 70s! lol) So there is a nod to the present.

Safer but in no shape or form more interesting. We gave up character as a city in exchange for more stability and safety. Not lamenting that but it is what it is.
Yes, I miss the 1970s: the crime and the grime, the drugs and the dread, the blood and the ****.
I miss seeing underage girls being victimized by pimps near the Port Authority bus terminal.
I miss being mugged twice a year.
I miss the lousy public services.
I wish we could go back to those days, now that I am old and near death, so that I can relive the wonder of my wild youth.
