Good day folks. I can say with near certainty that this may have already been asked, but since I couldn't find it, here's my question.

I've lived in upstate NY my entire life, except for the last few years which I've spent in medical school overseas. I've always wanted to live in the city, but I don't think I can afford that quite yet, so I'll be moving to and working in Brooklyn for at least three years, starting in early 2016. If all goes well.

In the virtue of planning ahead, my research tells me that Bay Ridge would be a suitable/affordable place for me as I'll only be making around 45K/year and possibly starting a family. I need your suggestions on what neighborhoods and areas would be most suitable for me, and all I ask is that they be safe & comparatively suitable for a family.

Also, I probably won't have a guarantor. Would that make it harder for me to acquire an apartment?

And at last, how much money should I have saved up prior to moving there? I understand this is on the personal finance end of the spectrum, but I am sure your wisdom and personal experiences are just as important.

Oh and while I'm here, let me just ask what places/cities other than Brooklyn are within a 60-90 minute commute? Considering I don't get a job where I want. I'm currently looking at Woodhull & Wyckoff Heights hospitals and a few others within Brooklyn, but I wouldn't mind that commute. (Would I?)

Any other tips you can dispense would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your time! This will be extremely helpful.

If Woodhull and Wyckoff hospitals are going to be potential places to work, you should look at Ridgewood to live. Talk to anon1 or G-Dale, these posters both know Ridgewood well.

The general rule of thumb that most landlords use is 40x monthly rent = minimum annual income before taxes. So if you're making $45K, this enables you to get an apartment that rents for $1125 per month. If you want to live in Brooklyn/Queens area, your wife will probably have to bring in some income as well, especially since you don't have a guarantor.

How likely is it that you will be able to get a job in a NYC hospital? I would imagine the NYC area is competitive for these types of jobs, but that's just a guess.

Also, another thing to note is that rents will surely go up in 2 years time.

I have family and friends that work at both and they all live in Queens, not Brooklyn. I'd search for places in Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth and Middle Village. You may end up having to take buses to the hospitals, but your commute should be well within an hour. If you drive a car, literally 15 minutes or so. All safe neighborhoods with Ridgewood being the sketchiest (still perfectly safe) but most convenient. I think if you search the market very well, you'll be able to find something within range of the price Henna mentions. Within the area you can even open up your job prospects to Elmhurst hospital and North Shore LIJ in Forest Hills, both of which I also have family working in which live in one of the 4 neighborhoods that I mention above.

I highly recommend Middle Village in Queens. It's a short train ride to Wyckoff, and is just as nice & safe as Bay Ridge. You won't have that beautiful view of the Verrazano though.

If you get a job at Lutheran, you could walk there from Bay Ridge.

Bay Ridge is awesome. I loved living there and sad I had to move out. I'm not sure if you are going to get by only making $45K. There are a lot of bar and Restaurants on 3rd-5th Ave. Maybe your wife can get a job as a waitress and help pitch in so that you won't have to struggle getting by.
