I was there on Monday but didn't notice any signs about store closing. However, I know that they've lost a lot of businesses to online retailers and other big box stores. It's always empty every time I go there. (After work, around 5:30PM) The staff are known to be rude and unhelpful.
To be honest, I am not sad that they're going out of business. If I need to buy something from a local store I go to B&H.
Back before internet shopping took off, I use to by my electronic crap at JR, 47th street photo, Wiz, Crazy Eddies.
Now I just go to newegg. Better prices, No taxes, and even with free regular shipping most things come the next day.
Agree the r small... 48th street use to be an awesome place for guitars. With all the guitar scores gone, there is no reason for me to go to Time square area at all.
J&R was actually competitive on certain items and I felt the sales staff was knowledgeable and polite--much more so than the average Best Buy salesperson. Some of the cashiers at J&R were a bit abrasive and treated people like cattle. The purchase process was ridiculous--as was the process to do a return or exchange.
yes staff was pretty rude & prices were blah in that maze
nyc needs more Duane Reade & starbucks in those valuable spots.
Not sure if you're serious or being sarcastic about more Duane Reade and Starbucks, but there are 2 Starbucks within one block radius from the the J&R stores.
Ok, so I think there may be some misunderstanding. I've read on other sites that J&R is going to renovate their store and reopen in 2015. They will continue to sell online throughout this process.
They are not closing permanently although some employees have been laid off.

In Vancouver, there is 3 starbucks in 1.5 block radius. madness

No we definitely don't need any more of that Star*ucks overrated sh**y "coffee".

J&R was a holdout, they managed to survive because they had some very loyal customers and were in a good area but that area is changing and also it's just simple economics and business. The store is too big and their marketing strategy is antiquated. I agree that shopping online is a breeze. J&R itself has a nice website, you can buy something and either pick it up at the store (guessing that option will no longer be available) or have it delivered. You can compare products and there is a ton of information but compare that to being in a uncomfortable, poorly laid out store where you have to talk to some rude sales guy who you don't exactly trust because you know he is trying to make commissions. It's a no-brainer what customers will choose.
