I make around 62k a year but I have about 700 in student loans and 300-400 in credit cards per month (that i've been paying off since i got the new job). I work in manhattan . Those student loans are a killer i know. I did the calculations and i should have 100-300 bucks left over every month but i just don't know how much taxes will be living in NYC (i hear they are alot more).
I've been looking at apartments for 1000 or 1100 a month in the bronx, brooklyn or queens but even then the options are limited. Luckily I am getting a car provided.
I guess my question is... is it possible or do I have to live in Jersey? I'd rather not do that... it seems like it's alot easier to get around in NY thanks to the subway system and such. Any or all suggestions are welcome here. Also, with these apartment buildings... where do i park? I'm assuming it's first come first serve on the street somewhere around it.
My friend tells me he knows someone with an apartment for 900 in the bronx with all utilities included (studio). I was considering that but I'm not sure about the area (i forgot which part it was in).
I know i'm asking/saying alot of stuff on this post but any thoughts are appreciated. I'm looking on zillow rentals and sometimes it's tough to determine what's a scam or what isn't.

Where do you work in Manhattan? If you work closer to midtown, check out Sunnyside, Astoria, Forest Hills (these are affordable only with a roommate, really. If lower Manhattan, maybe Bay Ridge in Brooklyn (maybe a small studio for $1100...).
If you chose to live in the Bronx, I know of one company that you deal with directly, so no brokers fee. If you're trying to avoid that. Studios $875 - $950 and 1 bedrooms @ $1100. First and last gets you in, takes less than a month to get keys Pre-war buildings on grand concourse and other surrounding areas... so space is NOT limited.
I don'''t know if I'm allowed to say names on here, if not PM me and I''ll tell you.
Are they paying for your parking? If not, that car is a liability and not a benefit.
Agreed with this one.
You'll be taking home about 3600 -3800 a month. Subtract your 1000 in student loan and credit card debt you're down to 2600-2800. Subtract cell phone, internet, electric, metrocard, food, necessities, you're down to about 1800-2000 a month. Subtract rent, you're down to 800-1000 a month leftover. If you insure your car in NYC, say goodbye to about 300 a month in insurance depending on the car and coverage and borough. Gas is about $4 a gallon.
Drop the car. You don't need it. Find a studio, however the cheapest you might find if you're lucky is going to be $900-1000. Even in my area studios are now up to $1100 and my area is cheap, although far from the city.
I've started looking in Bay Ridge. I get insurance and gas for the car paid for. I am hoping that I can get a place that includes some of the utilities in the rent but idk. The thing that sucks is the brokers fee. Takes off a chunk of the relocation money.
