It's uneducated and narrow-minded to ask someone to live within their means? Okay!

Are you serious? Several years ago I paid $1000 to move one, yes ONE block because we had a lot of furniture and boxes. I really don't get your logic. Do you think moving from one borough to another is any cheaper? People lose their jobs--has nothing to do with not living within their means. People get terminally ill and can no long work.

Wow. Just wow.

Not too much other areas aren't free. Housing costs have gone up all over the country. Even in rural areas. So unless you either have a lot of money saved up, a good job offer, or a paid for program at an university, you'd probably need family or friends who are willing to host you long term to move.

There are a lot of older people living in poverty in NYC. At this stage of the game, their health is too frail and their minds are halfway gone due to senility. They aren't moving anywhere. Some of them can barely move to the grocery store. NYC social services will have to deal with them.

It's only a slightly related statement but, this is really a real thing, that's real; there's organization that will pay your moving expenses out of NYC if you are below a certain income and have kin out of state.

This is not at all related. For this you'd have to have family out of state AND they have to be WILLING to host you. If they aren't interested in hosting you, this program does no good.

Sorry, NYC's not getting rid of its legion of poor people, many of whom are there multigenerationally.

You have no idea what this persons financial, health or family circumstances are yet you feel that you somehow know enough to make a statement like this. Do you really think that the only reason anyone would have money problems is because they aren't managing their finances responsibly?

Apparently the memo passed around in childhood about if you cannot say something nice..... must have passed you by.

You can check the Sunday NYT's each week for their "Neediest" cases of persons who for various reasons are down and need a helping hand. That is what *charity* is about in case you didn't know.

Often it is because of illness or an emergency causes prolonged unemployment with the tenant now several months behind in rent. These are not persons looking for a permanent touch, but just something to help them over a rough patch.

The Neediest Cases articles are only published around Christmas. Seems like right after Thanksgiving til a few weeks into January. The articles are part of a fundraising effort. (Edit: I think this is true; it just seems like I only see them around that time of the year, and not the rest of the year.)

Actually those articles could be a good resource for finding charities like Catholic or Jewish charities, because many of the articles mention a specific charity that helped the article subject with a back rent payment or a one-time payment for bunk beds or a utility that was turned off due to non-payment, etc.
