Want to be in a neighborhood with local shopping, great restaurants, shopping, but young. Not like Tribeca with kids everywhere, but somewhere young (in my late 20s). Need to be close to Meatpacking for work.

Would that put me in West Village or Chelsea? $6k/month budget. Are all of the buildings in the Village older? I like the facade of the old buildings but I like modern interiors with central AC.

I think walking commute would be ideal!

I am so overwhelmed, I don't know where to begin?

If your budget is 6k for monthly rent then you will not have any issues in west village/chelsea to find a place to live.

If you net OR gross $6K a month, as expensive as NYC is, there are only a few areas in all NYC that would be financially challeging:

East Side, West Side, Tribeca, Battery Park, Downtown Brooklyn / Cobble Hill and Forest Hills.

Otherwise, happy hunting

If you want to walk to work, why don't you start your search near where you work?
