I have a wedding in PA at the end of the month and going to spend a few days in NYC afterwards. I'll take a rental car from Breinigsville, PA to NYC (almost 2 hrs) so I need some suggestions on a good rental service that has a drop off point on the edge of the city. My hotel is on Times Square, but I would like to avoid driving very much in the city so I would take a cab to the hotel. Thanks

You'll have to be more specific. What do you mean by the "edge" and or not wishing to drive much "in" NYC? New York City is five boroughs and the edge could be anything from Newark Airport (just outside of Manhattan), Staten Island, Queens and so forth.

All four major car rental services are in NYC; National, Enterprise, Hertz and Alamo. Suggest you go to either their own or a travel website and check prices and locations. For drop off you'll need to enter a location but that requires you choosing a borough/area. By this I mean The Village, Upper East or West sides, Midtown etc... in Manhattan, or Brooklyn, Queens, or Staten Island.

When choosing a car rental company beware some such as Hertz do not allow 24/7 drop off. That is when the locations close you *must* keep the car until they open the next day. This means having to find a place to park the vehicle and getting up the next day to return.

You could always -

- drive to the next amtrak / bus station between you and NYC and take the train/ bus in
- return the car to an airport and take an airport shuttle or cab into the city

Maybe you don't need a rental car. Could someone give you a ride to Allentown, PA, or possibly some other nearby place that has a bus to NYC?

Amtrak doesn't run in that direction. Only NJ Transit would work. Someone more familiar with New Jersey would be helpful. On your way on I-78, the first station is in Lebanon, NJ. Two car rental agencies are within about half-mile from the train station. But that line is kinda slow and has infrequent service. Closer in, there's an Avis near the Summit station and an Entrerprise by Maplewood. Both on the same line off I-78. Probably the most convenient option.

Problem with that is aside from car share schemes the actual rentals work on 24hour clocks. So renting a car for a few hours just to get from PA to Newark (closest airport to NYC coming from that direction), makes no sense financially.

I've gotten rental cars for like $50 one-way with a deal out of JFK...

It can make sense financially if you get a good deal.

Yes, but what I'm trying to say to you is that to pay $50 for a car rental for just a few hours to get "close" to NYC, drop it off then pay for a bus, train or whatever to get into NYC makes no sense. If I'm driving from NJ to NYC anything close to the tunnels or GWB is the home stretch. I'd rather keep driving into the City and be done with things. Drop the rented car off at the nearest location to my home and call it a day.
