In Chicago there's a floor at the Merchandise Mart (called 1871) which hosts a lot of startups and tech companies. Whenever someone mentions 1871, you think of tech.

I was wondering if there's an equivalent building/area in NYC. Or, if not, what are the best software (web development) companies to work for?

Sometimes people call the area around Madison Square Park (especially to the north, south and west) "Silicon Alley". It's not any particular street, just a metonym for the tech industry in the area. That's one of the two clusters of tech jobs in NYC, the other being in Dumbo and spilling into Downtown Brooklyn.

I would love to work in the Flatiron building. Also good to know about "Silicon Alley".

The Silicon Valley of the East Coast aka the Flatiron District. Here's a map of tech jobs in Manhattan: Made In New York Digital Map - A visual testament to the vibrant state of New York's digital industry.

Also, DUMBO in Brooklyn and LIC Queens are similar to Chicago's "tech" district of River North
